Those Extra Calories That Could Give You Cancer!
A recent report from the World Cancer Research Fund drew a definite connection between being overweight and getting cancer. This report highlighted the fact that actually being overweight, is one of the most avoidable causes of cancer.
Those of us who have struggled with our weight for years, are usually pretty well acquainted with all the health benefits of losing weight. I venture to suggest that it is just possible that we can even become a bit blase about them because we hear them so often, so I must admit that I did get something of a shock therefore when I read this article.
I had never thought of the possibility of getting cancer from a few extra treats, maybe some extra pounds , but not cancer.
This particular report was aimed at women, and some of the potential risks therefore, are unique to women. I do think that everybody (men & women) should be as health concious as possible however, without turning into a neurotic, and it is only through better understanding and health awareness, that we are likely to acheive this.
The report went on to highlight the fact, that if you were to eat 500 calories more that you need every day for a year, you could gain an incredible 50 pounds in extra weight. With regard to those problems particularly associated with women, there is strong evidence that either being overweight, or going on to gain weight after the menopause, increases the risk of breast cancer.
There is also strong evidence that the risk of contracting cancer of the inner lining of the uterus, is increased by high body mass as well. When a woman is overweight according to the report, the fat cells produce oestrogens, and these can act as a growth hormone for many cancers which are hormone related, in women.
The report also gave some fascinating everyday examples of where those extra 500 calories were hiding. Here are just a couple for you:-
One tuna mayo baguette
Two glasses of white wine and a packet of peanuts
A twelve oz whole milk latte, and a Danish pastry.
All very scrummy, but all at around 500 calories each, so it shows you how easy it is to build those calories up without realising it.
The good news is that with simple lifestyle changes, we can all greatly reduce the risks of contracting this horrible disease through being overweight. Eating more fruit and vegetables, reducing our daily intake of meat and alcohol, and taking regular daily exercise, can reduce by half the instances of breast cancer, and by threequarters, the risk of other cancers such as stomach, colon, and bladder cancer, to name but a few.
Five portions of fruit and veg per day should be acheivable by all of us, especially when you remember that pulses (peas, beans etc) can not only be part of this five a day objective, they are just so good for you in their own right.
I still maintain that life is for living, and is to be enjoyed, not endured. After all there is no point in living in such a risk averse way, that we become frightened to do anything. In many ways the 24/7 media with its appetite for bad news and drama has been responsible for turning us into a risk averse society, at least that is in my own view.
However, even if we are not immortal in this life, there are so many many things that we can do to make life better, by improving our health. Be aware of health issues, live an active life, and enjoy a well balanced diet in moderation, would be my motto.
Never ever take your health for granted, it is just too precious
